Seasons Restaurant & Bar is on Broughton Street in central Edinburgh. The compact bar leads in from the street to the wood-lined dining rooms. The menus take their inspiration from the New Nordic school of cooking and the decor at Seasons is reminiscent of a Scandinavian mountain chalet or a sauna. Inventive drinks matched to the menu are an important part of Season’s appeal. After dinner, diners are welcome to continue their evening in the Liquor Library bar under the restaurant.
As the name suggests, the cycles of nature’s larder drive the menus at Seasons. On the plate, this means that dishes are not so much traditional recipes as carefully considered assemblies of Scottish and Scandinavian ingredients at their seasonal peak, thoughtfully cooked to enhance their true flavours.
While the lunch menu resembles a conventional set of dishes arranged by course, the dinner menu is a an ever changing list of roughly 30 ingredients which the kitchen uses to create a five or seven course meal. Guests are welcome to cross off ingredients if, for example, they don’t eat fish or meat.
The list of ingredients ranges from the familiar, such as monkfish, oatmeal and parsnip, to more exotic substances, many of them foraged. An example of a dish might be duck with roasted salsify and pumpkin purée. Each dish is a surprise and an adventure. Add in the innovative paired drinks and you have a unique culinary experience.
Seasons Restaurant and Bar is on Broughton Street, a ten minute walk from Waverley train station. The tram line terminates at York Place at the top of Broughton Street. There is restricted on-street parking. Edinburgh Playhouse, Multrees Walk and the Omni Centre are all within a five minute walk.
