The food is freshly made so took a wee while to be served but the food was worth the wait. Some nibbles while we waited would have been nice.

Combining restored Georgian features with contemporary touches, The Wine House 1821 is a very sleek drinking and dining spot. Huge picture windows look out onto the buzzy St. James Quarter, so you can enjoy drinks and nibbles while watching the world go by. As well as a vast array of wines, plus spirits, Italian beers and cocktails, visitors can enjoy Mediterranean-style cuisine, fizzy afternoon teas and Sunday roasts.
You can sample a range of nibbles, light bites, focaccias, large plates and sharing platters at The Wine House 1821.
Choices include fresh Italian flatbread with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar; buffalo mozzarella with wafer thin Parma ham and basil, and roasted mixed vegetable & pesto focaccia.
The sharing platters come in three choices, all with an Italian theme — cheese, cured meats and mixed vegetables. Or you could go for the combo platter which has choice picks from all three.
If you would rather a large plate, then take your pick from two hearty layered Italian dishes, lasagne or parmigiana.
A range of desserts are also available, such as the pear & ricotta cake with fresh raspberries or the classic profiteroles.
The Wine House 1821 is on Picardy Place in New Town, a 10-minute walk from Waverley station. The Edinburgh Playhouse and Princes Street are both nearby. Pay parking is available on the street outside.
